The definition
A recession is a sustained, broad decline in economic activity.
This site uses the common technical recession rule: two consecutive quarters of negative growth in real gross domestic product (GDP).
Real GDP measures economic output after adjusting for price changes. These figures are seasonally adjusted and cover the whole economy. GDP per person can fall even when total GDP grows.
The two-quarter rule is a useful shorthand. Employment, income and spending also matter, and GDP estimates can be revised. The answer reflects the latest published quarters, rather than a live measure of the economy.
Latest quarter: Jun 2026. Real GDP changed by +0.3% in Mar 2026 and +0.4% in Jun 2026.

Annualised growth is the compound yearly rate from the GDP level before the first quarter to the level at the end of the range. It accounts for the length of each term; short terms can still look volatile. Quarter percentages divide positive, negative or flat quarters by all quarters in that range. They use growth rounded to one decimal place, matching the charts; shares may not add to exactly 100% after rounding. Annualised rates use unrounded GDP levels.
